I've learned the ropes and know where I want to return next year.

Placed my jewelry with 6 different stores and one gallery! This was a higher number than the goal I'd set for myself so I was really pleased.

Became a premium member of Trunkt and have an ever growing portfolio there.

Improved my Focal Point Birth Pendant line and have had a bunch of sales through attachmentscatalog.com.

Created a line of copper and leather bookmarks which I love! I gave them to my whole family this holiday season!

Worked hard on my soldering skills in a 6 week mentored metalsmithing class.

Opened a shop on 1000Markets. It's a lovely site and well worth visiting!

Whew! And that's just the jewelry biz! Anyway, I hope to get back to regular posting and making some decisions on how best to use the blog. A few weeks ago I was surfing around and got in on a conversation about cross promotion. AlwaysAmy had this idea: 10 people mail out two promos to 10 other people across the country(world). Everyone takes the promos they get and posts them on two community bulletin boards. Then, take a picture, send it to Amy, and blog about it. About 20 people replied so Amy put us into two groups.

As of now, I've received 5 out of 10 promos and am planning where to post. I'm thinking the shops on Alki Beach are a good choice for a lot of exposure. Here's who's in my group:

AlwaysAmy
Bamabelle
RecycledIdeas
adlenskrafts
RosannaElizabeth
BeadBratOriginals
CustomMemoryBooks
DesignedbyLucinda
LoveMeKnotCreations
Stubbornwoman

I'll post pictures when I get everyone's promo!Beth Lisa Goss, Wire Treehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12801494842351677093noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203227735288642679.post-56853269979064294372008-06-25T07:05:00.000-07:002008-06-25T07:17:23.056-07:00Movin' Right AlongOh poor neglected blog. Let's get some new info out there!

First of all, I just spent four days staying with my sister-in-law and helping her with her new baby. Oh man, I love newborns! Certainly easier when they're not your own. Gave lots of breastfeeding help which, new moms and moms to be, you're gonna want! Get help- it might not come naturally and it might not feel so good.

Next, it's summer vacation for the kids! They're home all the time! I need a plan! Seriously, I'm hoping for lots of sun, time at the beach, and no homework. The kids are old enough to stay alone for a while too so I'm planning on a little time to myself.

Then there's the jewelry stuff. I'm happily making copper and have re-supplied the gallery. I also need to make more earrings for Oak, the craft store in Boston I've got my things in. And, I've got some shows coming up so I need to get cracking on the production! I don't know why I've been putting it off. I like pressure, I guess. And, I got accepted to trunkt, an online portfolio site that wholesalers and retailers like to shop. I need to spend time getting my portfolio together today, as I decided to spring for the premium account.

Finally, still sick. I'm frustrated to say that I'm still struggling with the after effects in June. I'm sick to my stomach most of the time and tired all the time. This is making moving ahead with my business plan very difficult. To say nothing of maintaining myself at work and being a good parent and wife.

I have so many cool ideas floating around in my brain that it's hard to sleep but I'm having trouble with the follow through.

To keep my spirits up, I'm moving along as though nothing has happened and planning for the future. I'm scheduling shows, which are fun and exciting, I've come up with two totally new design ideas that I've introduced to my shop, and I've had a meeting with a gallery director in West Seattle. And...... she took all my new copper patina pendants! That was a huge boost last week.

I guess I've been thinking a lot lately about what kind of person gives up under these circumstances and I'm hoping it's not me. It would be so easy to crawl into bed but something just won't let me do that. Doing my art has helped me to stay optimistic and has given me a reason to keep looking forward.Beth Lisa Goss, Wire Treehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12801494842351677093noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203227735288642679.post-85572874100392472902008-05-15T12:38:00.000-07:002008-12-11T23:50:12.253-08:00Trina and Friends

Afew weeks ago a new online crafts company asked if they could feature some of my pieces on their site. This site is geared toward "high end" shopping and I was pleased that their buyer felt that my jewelry qualified. A very nice thing about this site is that there will only be 5-10 sellers in any one category. This will make it MUCH easier to find my jewelry. I am, of course, sticking with Etsy because I love it there but this is another web presence for me.

Anyway, I check their site progress periodically and was surprised to find my pieces available for purchase today! The whole thing looks great and I'm excited to be part of it. After several unsuccessful attempts, I came upon a method that works for me and gets me some beautiful colors.

After shaping, sanding, hammering, and tumbling my copper, I use my butane torch. I heat the whole piece until it starts to turn and then I quench in cold water. I then put the copper back on the fire brick and heat all over again. I may do this process several times until I get the colors I want. Next, I run the copper upstairs to the freezer and leave it in for a few hours. The pieces have come out very shiny and with lovely color variations. I'm currently using no sealer, as I'm worried this will alter the patina. Let's see what happens....Beth Lisa Goss, Wire Treehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12801494842351677093noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203227735288642679.post-60873450049637428152008-04-20T12:39:00.000-07:002008-04-20T12:48:19.446-07:00Shows and HAIL!Yesterday was not the best day to spend outside doing a show. We got to see a mix of rain, sleet, sun, and hail stones- alternating about every 15 minutes! This did not make for a huge turn out at the Arts Unlimited show in Renton. Luckily, I was stationed near several Etsyrain folks and had people to talk to all afternoon.

I viewed this show as a learning experience. I'm actually rather proud to say that I was able to set up and take down my tent (with a little help) and could carry everything- including the cinder blocks I used to keep the tent from flying away. Those blocks are actually part of a bookcase that we built in our 20s and yes, we still use it.

I learned that I really need to order some tent walls! Thanks to Marlo and Suzanne for lending me their extras. Without them my tables would have gotten even more soaked. Ah yes, and thank to to Marlo for the paper towels. I figured out, too late, that if you're doing a show in the rain your tables will get wet while you set up your tent. I definitely need to throw in a roll next time.

Overall, I'm still glad I went- I even sold a pair of earrings. Now I'm very pumped for our next show in May. And it's indoors. I'm still not allowed to eat most foods and I'm not feeling my best but I've decided to forge ahead anyway! After a fun trip to NYC I've gotten to work on setting up my studio and making LOTS of pieces. I'm going to be doing a few shows in the coming months so I'm trying to get ready for them. Actually, on Saturday I'm doing my first outdoor show by myself. I've got the tent and tables and I'm pretty happy with the display this time. I'm using shutters to hang the earring cards and a wood lattice from some french doors to hang the pendants.

However..... it's supposed to rain and possibly SNOW on Saturday. Yes, I'm sure there's no trace of climate change! Snow in Seattle in mid-April is unheard of. So, I'm trying to figure out the best way to keep warm and dry and not have my jewelry blow away. Some other folks from EtsyRain, now also known as Puget Sound Indie Artisans, are brainstorming survival tips for the day.

And by the way, the Puget Sound Indie Artisans are putting on our own show the day before Mother's Day in Edmonds. We are so excited!Beth Lisa Goss, Wire Treehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12801494842351677093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203227735288642679.post-76528419716358030572008-03-06T13:18:00.000-08:002008-03-06T13:25:21.693-08:00Bead Trends Idea BookMy copies of Bead Trends March/April edition arrived in the mail today and I'm very excited! Two of my designs are featured with photos and instructions. This publication is always looking for designers to submit their pieces for review. The process was fairly simple and their photographer did a great job with everyone's jewelry. I'm still recovering from my surgery and find I'm passing out around 8pm these days. I've started teaching my night classes again so that's going to have to change. I'm also awaiting my 40th birthday with mixed emotions. Getting back to work is starting to help me feel "normal" again but I'm still not feeling like "me". I'm not really worried about aging and I'm excited about the future (as I look out the window at the rain). I just wish I could eat that chocolate cake that I'm not allowed to have. Doctors. Hmph.

Anyway, I've been experimenting with fusing rings these days and put a few in my etsy shop this week. I've also redesigned my work space in the basement. Maybe I'll get a picture up here next time.Beth Lisa Goss, Wire Treehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12801494842351677093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203227735288642679.post-39726694658925967552008-02-05T10:29:00.000-08:002008-12-11T23:50:13.690-08:00New Earrings I Like

Wow, being home recovering from surgery has given me all kinds of time on my hands. Her work includes rings, necklaces, belly dance belts, and purses. These pieces are totally original and simply gorgeous!

Quoting from her profile:
"I get my inspiration from some of the smallest particles known to humankind, AND ancient architecture, such as the Nazca Lines in Peru, and the Hill of Tara in Ireland. I'd like to think I am "remembering" my designs, rather than just creating them."

Her work can be seen and purchased on her Etsy site: http://www.electronrings.etsy.comBeth Lisa Goss, Wire Treehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12801494842351677093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203227735288642679.post-51099630953344254282008-01-25T10:19:00.000-08:002008-01-25T10:24:32.679-08:00Sick and TiredOh, it's been a long time since I've posted anything. Early this month I had emergency surgery to remove most of my small intestine and I've been trying to recover ever since! I'm still not back to my regular job and eating is a real chore. Needless to say, the jewelry making has been put on hold. I do have an order that needs to go to Boston next week so I'd better get crackin'.

On the odd chance that anyone has info for me about "short bowel syndrome", I'd gladly take it. I miss pizza!!!!!!!!!!!!Beth Lisa Goss, Wire Treehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12801494842351677093noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203227735288642679.post-55724908731864736762007-12-28T11:06:00.000-08:002008-12-11T23:50:13.992-08:00Fusing!

Earlier this month I took a class on fusing and it's opened up a whole new world of ideas for me. A long time ago I took lots of classes on soldering, so I know how that goes, but it's messy and requires more time and equipment. The basic idea behind fusing is that you don't need solder or flux or pickle. You simply heat the metal with a butane torch (mine's a micro torch) until the silver begins to liquify and flows. Basic materials that I aquired to do this:

micro torch

butane

fire brick

old cookie sheet to sit the brick on

bowl of water to quench the hot silver

fine silver wire- 14 g.

tumbler

I'm using fine silver instead of sterling because sterling silver gets fire scale when heated. That's where the pickling comes in. With fine silver you simply heat it, quench it, and tumble it if you want it really shiny. The tumbler also work hardens the metal. Fine silver is especially soft after being heated so it's important to tumble it so that the piece keeps its shape.

So, I've set up a workspace in the basement for the metal work and I'm loving it! For me, designing metal pieces feels more creative than bead work. I love beautiful beads but I'm excited about the direction my work is taking. I'm planning on using the stones as accents in my new pieces and really concentrating on the look of the silver or copper.
Beth Lisa Goss, Wire Treehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12801494842351677093noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203227735288642679.post-90567018853735067202007-12-11T09:33:00.000-08:002008-02-04T15:00:49.652-08:00the handbook to handmade

I arrived home from NYC last night to find my edition of the handbook to handmade: Volume I! I'm happy to report that all gifts (except 2 books) are handmade by me, and others, and I didn't have to enter a mall once! I've had a great time going to crafts fairs and shopping on Etsy and I really like the gifts I'm giving this year. My husband and I have decided to try to have a "not made in China holiday season" this year and it's really hard! Especially shopping for kids who really want to fit into mainstream culture right now. Many are just not interested in being original, what they want most is to fit in. That's been a hard one to grapple with as a parent of a teenager. All we can do is set an example and hope....This is why I can't wait to see how they turn out.Beth Lisa Goss, Wire Treehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12801494842351677093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203227735288642679.post-77301360773685759302007-12-03T11:04:00.000-08:002008-12-11T23:50:14.163-08:00Snow! And blog about it. Eesh.
Beth Lisa Goss, Wire Treehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12801494842351677093noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203227735288642679.post-53689322454890352522007-11-30T12:40:00.000-08:002008-12-11T23:50:14.824-08:00Stepping Outside My Comfort Bubble

Ok, so I went to a crafts fair last night at a local elementary school and had a lot of fun. I got to talk with people I hadn't seen in a long time and had an "adult" evening. Plus, I sold several pieces which always puts me in a good mood. This setting up your table at a crafts fair thing is a lot harder than it looks! This was my 5th time since last Spring and I feel like I finally have an arrangement I like. Decorating and arranging really doesn't come naturally for me! Anyway, I'm so glad I decided to step outside my comfort bubble and keep trying with this new business. I'm having a great time creating (which is the best part) but I'm also meeting really interesting new people and doing things I never would have done before.

I'm rambling. Last night 10 of us got together on Julie's houseboat (awesome!) to put together sampler bags. Each of us brought 10 handmade items, each worth $10, and then we put together 20 sampler bags to sell in our shops and to promote EtsyRain. So, each bag has $50 worth of items and we're selling them for $25. Each member then keeps what thier listing earns.

The bags contain jewelry, note cards, candles, and beautiful textiles. Part of me is hoping one of them won't sell so that I can keep the contents for myself!

Come visit my etsy shop to find links to all of the artists who participated.

And Trina, last night was NOT a good time for a swim!
Beth Lisa Goss, Wire Treehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12801494842351677093noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7203227735288642679.post-68767092754541148312007-11-14T12:07:00.000-08:002007-11-14T12:10:44.144-08:00Talentdatabase.comI just found out that I'm a featured artist this week on talentbase.com. I loved the atmosphere at Stir and I enjoyed hanging out with old and new etsyrain friends. We had a great turn out and a number of folks I invited came to check it out. We kept the door open to lure in art walkers and it got very cold! If Kimberly is ever nice enough to host another etsyrain event I'll definitely bring my sweater.

Anyway, I made lots of sales that night and I got a much needed confidence boost. Tonight I'm headed to an open house at Salon Zeka where some of my pieces are being sold.
